Get out there and try – Part 2

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

Last week I talked about the fact that ‘every accomplishment starts with the decision to try.’

Well, I want to revisit that topic again this week and tell you a personal story.

A number of years ago a single mom in our church was dealing with the pain of her mother dying in the hospital.

My wife offered to cook her and her two children a nice, hot meal on one of those days that she really needed it.

About a month later the call came for the meal, but my wife was away on a ladies’ retreat for the weekend.

I explained the dilemma to our friend but she was not deterred by the glitch.

“Whatever you cook for me and my kids will be just fine, Pastor Brian! Please bring the supper up to the hospital tomorrow evening.”

Before I could protest and tell her my cooking skills were abysmal she had hung up.

I was stupefied and wondered what on earth I could do to salvage this offer my wife had made and now left me to cover for her.

I got on the phone and quizzed ladies in my church about how long to cook chicken, certain vegetables, etc.

I then went to the store with one of my daughters and bought what I needed.

I opened my wife’s spice rack and simply chose various spices at random and sprinkled them on the chicken blindly.

When the meal was cooked I dressed up in a tuxedo shirt and brought three settings of our fancy dishes in a picnic basket up to the second floor of the hospital.

I prayed with them, poured the sparkling grape juice, and then left the food for them to (gulp) enjoy.

As it turned out, they loved my meal and this woman even asked me for the recipe for my chicken!

So folks, if a bumbling kitchen derelict like myself can pull something like this off simply by being willing to try, surely you can, too!

So, get out there and try!
