Kid’s Fishing Derby a success in Dresden (Photos)

Approximately 130 kids lined the shores of the Sydenham River at the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 113 in Dresden on Saturday for the annual kid’s fishing derby.

“It’s surprising you can get them on that short of beach, but they’re there,” Dennis Wicks, the new organizer of the event, told the Sydenham Current.

Wicks took over for long-time organizer Bob Everitt, who died back in February.

“Bob did it for 28 years straight, non-stop,” Wicks said.

“This was his big event, he loved it. He went around to all the merchants and on average Bob would raise $2,000.”

Wicks said it was through Everitt’s hard work why they are able to give out nine bicycles to lucky participants each year.

“So we’ve re-named the event the Bob Everitt Memorial Kid’s Fishing Derby,” he said.

Everitt’s wife and daughters were in attendance on Saturday as well, helping cook hot dogs at the event.

“It has been a great day and we’ve had great weather,” Wicks said.
