Lions Clubs International celebrate Centennial
Lions Clubs International celebrated its 100th anniversary this week with a flag-raising at the Civic Centre.
Officials from the Chatham Club were joined by Mayor Randy Hope in raising the group’s centennial flag.
Lions International was founded in Chicago June 7, 1917 and has grown to nearly 47,000 clubs worldwide. In addition to the Chatham club, there are clubs in Wheatley and Tilbury as well as a fledgling group in Wallaceburg.
The organization’s mission statement is “to empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and promote international understanding through Lions clubs.”
Mayor Hope said the Lions club is another example of Chatham-Kent residents stepping up to serve the community. “Groups such as the Lions are a fine example of people who give their time and effort to make their community, their country and their world a better place.”
‘Cool’ down with the OPP
Demonstrating positive behaviour and participating in random acts of kindness is the “cool” thing to do this summer.
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is proud to be partnering once again with Mac’s Convenience Stores across Ontario for this year’s for Operation Freeze 2017.
OPP officers will be on the lookout and if they catch a youth showcasing positive behavior in their community they may receive a thank you in the form of a ticket for a Mac’s Froster drink.
A youth may receive a “positive ticket” from an officer for a number of positive behaviours: helping others in need, being leaders, doing a good deed and/or participating in community activities. Officers may also use the positive tickets as an ‘icebreaker’ to interact with youth.
In the summer of 2016, the OPP distributed over 27,500 Operation Freeze tickets throughout the province.
Firefighters ‘Field Days’ being held in Corunna
The Corunna Volunteer Firefighters Association’s 40th Annual Field Days are set for Friday evening and Saturday at the Corunna Fire Hall.
The annual event is a fundraiser for the 32-member association, helping it support community groups, projects and minor sports.
The event opens Friday 7 p.m. at the Fire Hall, with the bands The Rapid and Jabrito performing an age 19-plus show beginning at 8 p.m.
Saturday’s, events begin at 11 a.m. with a Parade down Lyndock Street, Featuring special guests, from the Kids hit TV Show Paw Patrol, as Marshall, Chase, Rubble and Skye will all be in attendance.
Following the Parade, the Fire Hall opens at 11:30 a.m., there will be a meet and greet with the characters Marshall, Chase, Rubble and Skye from the Paw Patrol, as well as inflatables, games and a barbecue, Fire Trucks will have a sprinkler ball on it, so that kids can run around and get wet playing in the water similar to a splash pad.
Along with the fun and music, the field day is an opportunity for association members to pass along information about fire prevention and safety.
Those presentations are set for 1 p.m. Saturday, and include mock rooms created to demonstrate how quickly a fire can spread, and how firefighters battle the flames, as well as shown how sprinkles operate during a fire. There will also be fire extinguisher demonstrations, and have a smoke house trailer there so children can learn about how to escape from a fire.
All Saturday activities are all free and open to the public.
The live music continues Saturday evening at 8 p.m. with the bands Down River Boys and Fake Low. That activity is also for ages 19-plus.
