The cause of a truck fire on Gordon Street in Wallaceburg on Thursday is undetermined.
Whitney Burk, community safety officer with Chatham-Kent Fire and Emergency Services, said in a press release that firefighters from Station 3 in Wallaceburg and Station 2 in Chatham responded to a report of house fire at 1502 Gordon Street in Wallaceburg at 5:28 a.m.
“On arrival they found a pickup truck in the driveway was fully engulfed with flames,” Burk stated.
“Due to the close proximity of the truck to the home, the fire had also begun to extend to the attic. Crews were able to rapidly extinguish the truck fire and the quick knockdown the fire in the attic prevented further spread and save the home.”
Burk said everyone was able to exit the home safely and no one was injured.
“Firefighters will be returning to the area (on Friday) to conduct an ‘After the Fire – Reassurance Campaign’,” she said.
“While visiting residents, crews will check smoke alarms, discuss fire safety planning and answer questions.”
Fire officials say approximately $70,000 worth of damage was caused, while $125,000 worth of property was saved.
The cause of the blaze is undetermined.
Tina McAdams, who lives nearby, told the Sydenham Current she was woken up by a “loud hissing sound” at around 5:20 a.m.
“I looked out the window and the car kinda blew up,” she said.
“So I ran outside and a man in a black truck ran up to the door and banged on it to let the people inside know that their truck was on fire, as I ran in to call 911. The house also caught fire on the side where the truck was.”
After calling 911, McAdams said emergency crews were at the scene within eight minutes.
Burk said Chatham-Kent Fire and Emergency Services is reminding residents, only working alarms save lives.
“Ensure your home is protected from fire and carbon monoxide and your family is safe,” she said.
