Missing Gator recovered, man arrested

The case of a missing Gator in Chatham has been solved by the Chatham-Kent Police Service.

Police officials say a John Deere Gator valued at approximately $16,000 was on loan from McGrail Farm Equipment to the Canada Day 150 Committee and was used during the Canada Day event held within Tecumseh Park on Sunday, July 2, 2017.

Sometime between Sunday, July 2, 2017 at 9:00 p.m. and Monday, July 3, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. the Gator was stolen from Tecumseh Park located at 50 William Street N. in Chatham.

After exhausting all other investigative measures, a media release pertaining to this stolen Gator, was sent out on Wednesday, July 5, 2017 asking for the public’s assistance.

Yesterday morning at 11 a.m. police attended an address on Wellington Street E. in Chatham
as the homeowner found the Gator at the rear of her property.

As the homeowner was walking the officer to where she found it, a man not known to the homeowner was sitting on the Gator, attempting to start it.

At 11:30 a.m. the 54-year-old Chatham man was arrested and charged with possession of property obtained by a crime over $5000. He was transported to Chatham-Kent Police Service Headquarters where he has been held for a bail hearing.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service would like to thank the citizens of this community for your help in being able to return the undamaged Gator to McGrail Farm Equipment.
