‘Fantastic’ time at Emancipation Day in Dresden

Organizers are thrilled with the turnout, once again, at the annual Emancipation Day festivities at Uncle Tom’s Cabin Historic Site in Dresden.

Steven Cook, the curator at Uncle Tom’s, told the Sydenham Current it is always one of their best days of the year.

“The music is always fantastic and everyone thought that the Motown Boys were fun,” Cook said on Saturday.

“A lot of people thought they were from Detroit, but they are Canadian. Some have roots in the States but it’s a Canadian group. So they were fantastic. The acting group… it was so high energy and they tell so much.

Cook said the presentation of North is Freedom: The Legacy of the Underground Railroad presentation by Yuri Dojc was outstanding.

“We normally put 50 to 60 people in here, but we had over 80 each time (11 a.m. and 1 p.m.) It was fantastic,” he said.

Cook said they were happy that the weather cooperated as well.

“he program was varied. A a lot of history and heritage. We met new descendants that are here for the first time. They are new friends to the site and that is fantastic.”

Cook said he wanted to thank the RBC Foundation, who provides funding for the event.

“Without that financial support, we wouldn’t be able to put together such an engaging program,” he said.
