Ontario sending relief money to Mexico

Premier Kathleen Wynne released the following statement to announce support for earthquake relief efforts in Mexico:

“On behalf of the people of Ontario, I wish to convey our deepest compassion and concern for everyone affected by the recent earthquakes in Mexico.

Ontario is home to people from all over the world, whose backgrounds and contributions have helped to build our province. When a disaster like this one strikes, it takes a toll on all of us.

Since September 19, we have all been affected by the images from Mexico of collapsed buildings, including an elementary school, and we have heard the stories of people who boarded buses to the disaster sites to bolster the search and recovery efforts. The devastation is widespread and we are compelled to help our neighbours on their long road to recovery and rebuilding.

Ontario has always stood willing to help those in need, and we always will. Our government will be contributing $100,000 to the Mexican Red Cross through the Canadian Red Cross to assist the people of Mexico in the aftermath of this tragedy.

I want to thank the many people in Ontario who have individually committed to help, and encourage everyone to consider making a personal donation to the Canadian Red Cross.”

Public & Catholic school boards release EQAO results

Lambton-Kent District School Board

The Lambton-Kent District School Board renews its commitment to improving academic outcomes in the areas of mathematics and literacy, following the release of the 2016-2017 the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) results on Sept. 20.

The LKDSB reports consistent results in its EQAO results for Grades 3 and 6 reading, writing and mathematics, compared to last year. This demonstrates the ongoing commitment of LKDSB educators and administrators to supporting student success.

The EQAO results have remained relatively stable in the LKDSB throughout the past five years. The LKDSB results are slightly higher than the provincial average in Grade 9 applied mathematics.

However, the LKDSB is slightly below the provincial average in Grades 3 and 6 reading, writing and mathematics.

Similarly, the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test and Grade 9 academic mathematics results are below the provincial average.

The EQAO assessments are a reflection of the progressive learning throughout the elementary and secondary levels and they are one of several tools used by teachers and administrators to assess students.

While the results inform decisions to promote student academic achievements, the LKDSB continues to focus on differentiation and supporting student success and wellbeing.

“We appreciate the ongoing commitment of our educators and administrators – not just in the grades assessed by EQAO, but at all levels – to improve academic outcomes for students in the areas of mathematics and literacy,” stated director Jim Costello.

“We are proud of the progress of our students and we continue to look for ways to improve our assessment preparation and the integration of technology to enhance learning opportunities.”

The LKDSB believes education is a partnership between students, parents, school and the community. In order to maximize academic outcomes and achievement, the LKDSB is committed to working together to foster success for all students.

St. Clair Catholic District School Board

The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) has released the school, board and provincial results for the 2016-2017 Grade 3 and 6 assessments for reading, writing and mathematics.

“Our students continue to demonstrate strong performance on these assessments for reading and writing, which is at or above the provincial average in both Grade 3 and 6,” says Laura Callaghan, Superintendent of Education for elementary curriculum.

Although the Board’s results for math have moved above the province in Grade 3, there is still clearly work to do to help bring more of our Grade 6 students to the provincial standard.

“Our teachers, principals and support staff continue to make math a priority and are working to ensure progress in this area,” says Mr. Callaghan.

“We appreciate their ongoing efforts.”

Scott Johnson, Superintendent of Education for secondary curriculum, said there was a concerted focus at the secondary level to increase the achievement of students studying in the applied stream.

“These efforts have yielded results, with students scoring 13 percentage points above the provincial average – an improvement of 17 percentage points over the previous year,” he said.

“The data shows that we are having some success in moving our students towards the provincial standard in Grade 9 math.”

EQAO report summarizes achievement in four levels:

– Level 4 – exceeding the provincial standard

– Level 3 – meeting the provincial standard

– Level 2 – approaching the provincial standard

– Level 1 – performing significantly below the provincial standard

Data from all EQAO assessments is analyzed annually and used to develop improvement plans, under the direction of the K-12 Catholic Learning Services team. School principals and staff will also be required to report their improvement plans to the Board, based on the results of the 2016-2017 assessments.
