Photos of the day – Terry Fox at WDSS

The Terry Fox Auction was a huge success at WDSS last week.

A few donations are still coming in, but organizers say that they made around $1,000, one of their highest totals since 2008.

Several WDSS staff members donated items such as cupcakes, gift cards, PSW program potluck tickets, homemade sushi lunch for 4, lemonade for the class, which were auctioned off with all proceeds going to the Terry Fox Foundation.

The Grade 7 and 8 students also took a walk in honour of Terry Fox and there was also a school assembly before the auction.

Here are some submitted photos from the event:

TEDx ChathamKent 2017 tickets available

Ticket sales are underway for TEDx ChathamKent 2017, “The Change Makers.”

Among the speakers is itinerant fabric artist Harriet Riddell. Harriet, who grew up in Oxfordshire, England, but has connections to Chatham-Kent, travels the world with her sewing machine, pitching up in challenging locations, from the slums of Nairobi to the tea fields of the Himalayas. Through free motion embroidery, she captures her surrounding environment, and the people she meets. Adventure and interaction are key elements to each piece of Harriet’s work. Behind every ‘stitch’ lies a narrative of the people, place, and culture. Come out to watch Harriet create an embroidery piece live on stage.

Other presenters announced, out of an expected field of more than 16 speakers and entertainers, are game theorist, Dr. Manuela Dal Borgo of Cambridge, UK; Neuroscientist, Dr. Lecia Brown of Florida, director of the LAMB charitable foundation in her homeland, Jamaica; Chatham-Kent educator and Little Free Pantry developer Jennifer Kranenburg; poet and storyteller Vanessa Shields of Windsor; and mountaineer Matthew Knarston, a native of New Zealand.

TEDx ChathamKent 2017 is an independently organized TED event that brings together thinkers from the local area and beyond to present ‘Big Ideas’ related to Technology, Entertainment, Design, and more. It takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday, October 19th at the Chatham Capitol Theatre, 238 King St W, Chatham.
