Licence plate recognition technology leads to arrest

The OPP utilized licence plate recognition technology to help make an arrest in Chatham-Kent last week.

OPP officials say on December 21 around 7:45 a.m. a member of the Chatham-Kent Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was operating an Automatic Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR) vehicle, which detects licence plates in poor standing.

As the officer was travelling southbound on Communication Road, the ALPR vehicle alerted the officer to a licence plate on a vehicle travelling northbound.

The vehicle was subsequently stopped and investigated , police say.

As a result, the male driver, a 29-year-old from Chatham, was charged with driving while under suspension and drive motor vehicle, no validation on plate, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.

He is scheduled to appear in the Provincial Court in Chatham at a later date to answer to the charge.
