The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority (SCRCA) has issued a water safety bulletin, as ice jamming and localized flooding is possible in Wallaceburg and Dresden.

SCRCA officials say 10 to 20 mm of rainfall fell on Monday across the region.

“Fluctuations in temperature and recent rainfall over the past two weeks has resulted in the deterioration of ice on the river,” SCRCA officials stated.

“Minor ice jamming and localized flooding is possible in the lower reaches of the watershed between Wallaceburg and Dresden as ice begins to shift.”

SCRCA officials say water levels are gradually rising and river ice continues to deteriorate across the region.

“River flows are anticipated to be elevated with possible localized flooding in floodplain areas as a result of recent rainfall and snow melt,” SCRCA officials stated on Tuesday.

“Rainfall and warmer temperatures have left minor traces of snow on the land and further influence of snow on the Sydenham River water levels is not expected. In St. Clair Township, Pretty Road near Stanley Road will be closed due to flooding.”

SCRCA officials say no additional precipitation is expected for the next few days.

“Levels are anticipated to remain high for the next few days,” SCRCA officials say.

“Water levels across the watershed are expected to moderate and gradually decrease in the next 48 hours as precipitation subsides and temperatures drop below freezing however, warmer temperatures and further rainfall forecast over the weekend is anticipated to result in water levels rising again.”

Conservation officials say recent rainfall and warm temperatures have resulted in ice deterioration along the St. Clair River as well.

“Localized ice jamming may be possible and could result in minor flooding in low-lying areas,” SCRCA officials say.

“The Conservation Authority continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media should flood issues arise. Residents are reminded to avoid watercourses and flooded areas due to slippery banks, cold and swift moving water and deteriorating ice. Parents are urged to keep children away from floodplain areas.”

SCRCA officials say municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely.

This water safety bulletin will remain in effect until Wednesday January 24, 2018 unless otherwise updated.
