Walpole Island school closed due to ‘flu epidemic’

The elementary school on Walpole Island will be closed on Friday, as they deal with a flu epidemic.

Russ Blackbird, principal of Bkejwanong Kinomaagewgamig, announced the closure in a letter sent to parents and posted on social media.

“The current issue is that the flu epidemic, strep, as well as other viral infections have hit the school and students are being exposed to bacteria each day,” Blackbird wrote.

“Students have continued to attend school exposing other students and staff to risk of spreading these forms of bacteria. Also as a result, the staff and supply list for coverage has also been hit by the flu and as such, we are losing essential coverage services for student instruction and supervision.”

Blackbird said closure of the school to students on Friday will allow the remaining school staff to begin the process of sanitizing and cleaning all rooms and contents utilized by students.

“If your child is showing any signs of cold or flu symptoms (fever, headaches, coughing, body aches) please keep them home for the remainder of the week,” he wrote.

“Miigwetch for your assistance and consideration for the safety of our children.”
