Animal control: Dogs had attacked before

Animal control officials in Chatham-Kent say the dogs that attacked a 3-year-old boy in Wallaceburg last month, had attacked before.

Jason Hamm, manager of animal control services, provided an update to the media on the February 5 attack.

“Two dogs attacked a young boy as well as posed a menace to others at Jaycee Park in Wallaceburg,” Hamm said in a press release.

“Animal Control from PAW Rescue seized the animals that night and held them in their care pending investigation.”

Through the investigation it was discovered that these dogs had previously attacked two other dogs, Hamm alleges.

“On Friday, March 16th 2018 the owner surrendered the ownership of the dogs to PAW Rescue,” he said.

“On March 19th 2018 the owner was invited to visit with the dogs, afterwards they were humanely euthanized.”

The owner has been charged with multiple charges under the Dog Owners’ Liability Act and Chatham-Kent’s Responsible Animal Ownership By-Law #93-2015, Hamm said.

“Further details will be released if and when they become available.”

The owner also faces charges of criminal negligence from the Chatham-Kent Police Service.
