Man charged after crashing into a dumpster

A man faces multiple charges after allegedly crashing into a dumpster.

Police official allege shortly after 2 a.m. on Thursday morning, police received information that a man had just crashed into a dumpster and large blue waste bin in a parking lot on St. Clair Street in Chatham.

Upon arrival, police observed damage to the front of the 2013 Audi sedan and while speaking with the driver, believed he was driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Police officials allege the man was arrested and transported to police headquarters for breath tests and a drug recognition evaluation, where it was determined that he was impaired by alcohol, an antidepressant and cannabis.

Through investigation, police learned that the vehicle the man was driving was stolen from a residence in Chatham and that he was in possession of several items stolen from their garage.

Damage was also caused to another vehicle parked in the driveway.

The 21-year-old man has been charged with impaired driving, break and enter, theft of motor vehicle, mischief under $5,000 and two counts of being in possession of property obtained by a crime under $5,000.

He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.
