The cause is undetermined after a fire broke out at an apartment complex on Richmond Street in Chatham on Sunday.
Fire officials say firefighters from stations #1 and 2 were called to the blaze at 7 p.m.
“A quick response by firefighters allowed for rapid extinguishment of the fire and very limited damage to adjacent apartments,” fire officials said in a media release.
The estimated damage is pegged at $15,000, while over $750,000 worth of property was saved.
“Significant smoke and water damage to apartment of origin, fire officials said.
Fire officials added that working smoke alarms save lives.
“Tenants are required by law to notify the landlord if the smoke alarm is inoperable. It is against the law for tenants to remove the batteries or tamper with the smoke alarm in any way. Tenants should contact their landlord immediately if they do not have the required number of smoke alarms,” fire officials said.
