‘The Popcorn Barn’ launching in Wallaceburg

A. Debot & Sons is launching a unique new product in Wallaceburg next week.

The Popcorn Barn will feature an innovative package of microwave popcorn, which includes: cobs of corn, which are put in bags, placed in a microwave and popped directly off of the cob.

“We were kicking stones around last winter saying, ‘what can we do?’” Dennis Debot told the Sydenham Current.

“Something different on the farm and we said, ‘well let’s do some popcorn. Let’s leave it on the cob and pop it off the cob.”

Each package comes with two cobs, two microwavable bags and all of the popping instructions.

The product is non-GMO, gluten free and 100% whole grain popcorn.

It is grown and packaged in Wallaceburg, Dennis said.

The product will be available for purchase initially at Movie Time and Duchene Paint & Accent Alley in Wallaceburg starting on Monday, December 10.

“We are having a soft launch on Monday and we are going to try to hit some local variety stores and see how it goes over,” Dennis said.

“If it goes over well, we are going to see if we can go into a big box or No Frills.”.

Chad Debot, Dennis’ son, said a bigger launch is set to take place in January.

“My daughter is doing a fundraiser for their trip to Paris in 2020, so we are going to be at the radio station with Greg (Hetherington) for a couple of hours on the 18th of January and National Popcorn Day is January 19… so we are going to do it a day before.”

Some of the proceeds from this event will be donated to help offset the cost of his daughter’s trip, Chad said.

For Christmas, The Popcorn Barn also has some special Christmas ornaments available, of course, filled with corn.

“There is a 14 ounce, which is the bigger jars and some of the smaller ones there they range from $2.99 to $5 for the smaller bulb.”

Chad added they are looking at possibly selling the product through an online store, but they are currently limited by the number of packages they can produce in-house.

“If it does go over as anticipated, then you can move to a packing machine or something like that,” Chad said.

“In the future I would like to go bigger on the open market,” Dennis added.

“I would like to do more. “

Although the site is not yet live, more details will soon be available at popcornbarn.ca.
