Update: ‘Suspicious’ person story was fabricated

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: As previously released, last Friday morning, police received information that two teenage girls were approached by a man while walking on Princess Street near King Street.

Through investigation, police have learned that the incident was fabricated.

“We would like to remind everyone that making a false statement to police is a criminal offence,” police officials say.

“Please talk to your kids about lying to the police as officers spent numerous hours canvassing the area and trying to obtain video surveillance of the incident in an effort to identify this suspicious man for public safety reasons. Police resources over the weekend could’ve been better utilized if everyone had been honest from the beginning.”
