A downpour at Dresden Raceway did not deter about 800 fans from hitting the opening day at Dresden Raceway this afternoon.

The day started as Minister Monte McNaughton, Chatham-Kent Mayor Darrin Canniff and Councillor Jamie McGrail cut the ribbon on the season opener and doled out prizes to local fans.

On the track, fenders and rainsuits were the order of the day as the track went from fast to sloppy in the time span of three races. Fans stuck out the rain to bet $23,334 on nine races.

14-year old trotting WINZEL made his 51 st lifetime trip to the winner’s circle for co-owner, trainer and driver Brittany Kennedy of Dorchester as well as co-owners Jack and Nancy Holmes of Clinton. The Royal Strength gelding has over $324,000 in the bank in lifetime earnings.

Tyler Borth and Nick Steward each had driving doubles on the day.
