Wallaceburg Concert Band show cancelled

Due to the wet conditions at Crother’s Park, the Wallaceburg Concert Band has decided to cancel their show scheduled for today, Sunday, June 2.

“Wisdom says that today’s concert does not go ahead,” the Concert Band posted on social media.

I just returned from Crother’s Park. While it’s supposed to become mostly sunny by lunchtime and some will question the decision consider that: My walk from the parking lot to the pavilion left my feet and pant cuffs soaked. The grass is very long and having it dry enough that people will want to walk through it are slim. Even if the grass dries, the ground is saturated and will give people soakers in many places.”

The band says children will not be able to play in long, wet grass or sit on the ground.

“It is quite cool and very windy right now,” the band says.

“I just listened to the forecast and the temp will not rise out of the 60’s today and the winds will be near 50kmp all day. The cool temps and wind= not pleasant listening conditions for anyone. Strong winds like those forecast will play havoc with the microphones I used to amplify the flute and clarinet sections last year. I don’t enjoy the thought of the dozens and dozens of trips from the parking lot, over the hill to the pavilion through the swampy conditions.”

The band added it won’t be a pleasant experience for an audience, let alone the band.

“Rather than entertain a small audience of die-hards, I’d rather save the music and perhaps present it in late September or early October,” the band posted.

“Rushing to find an alternate location isn’t in the cards. We might find a drier location but the wind and temps won’t be any different and if it does get sunny, we really need to be sheltered which is why we chose the location in the first place and had arranged to set up tents to extend the pavilion for the back row.”

The banded added: “There will no-doubt be disappointed people, but I believe this to be the right decision for both us and the audience. It’s a judgement call and even when it turns sunny this afternoon, I hope that folks will understand.”
