Man charged with flight from police

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: Last Thursday afternoon, an officer from the Traffic Unit observed a man driving with an expired val tag on Longwoods Road.

The officer initiated a traffic stop and through investigation suspected the man was driving while under the influence of alcohol.

As the officer explained the roadside breath test to the man, he accelerated at a high rate of speed and drove away.

In doing so, the man ran over the officer’s foot and nearly struck another vehicle while pulling back onto the roadway.

Due to the weather conditions and high volume of traffic, the officer did not purse the man for public safety reasons.

Early this morning, police located and arrested the man.

The 41-year-old Chatham man has been charged with flight from police, assault with a weapon, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, refusing a breath demand, driving with no insurance and failing to comply with his release conditions.

He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.

The officer did not require medical attention.

Man charged with break and enter

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: Yesterday morning, around 10:30 a.m. police received information that someone was inside a residence under construction on Murray Street in Chatham.

Officers found the man on the back deck washing his clothes in a bucket.

A 41-year-old Chatham man was arrested and charged with break and enter and failing to comply with his Probation Order.

He was released pending a future court date of July 12, 2019.

Man charged with mischief

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: On Saturday, a man and woman were travelling on Bear Line Road when a verbal argument started.

The man reached over and grabbed the key from the ignition while the woman was driving.

As he pulled the key, it broke and the vehicle stalled.

The man fled on foot, leaving the woman and their 8-month-old daughter, stranded on the side of the road.

Yesterday afternoon, the 23-year-old Chatham man attended police headquarters and turned himself in.

He has been charged with mischief under $5,000 and held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Man charged with assault

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: Yesterday afternoon, police responded to a domestic disturbance at a residence in Chatham.

Through investigation, police learned that the man had assaulted the woman earlier in the week.

The 42-year-old Chatham man was arrested and charged with assault.

He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.
