Enbridge Supports Wetland Restoration Project

Steven Jelich, Director of Southwest Region Operations at Enbridge Gas presents Joe Faas, Chair of the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority a cheque for $10,000 that contributed to the creation of two wetlands and planting of over 1,300 trees at a local landowners property.

Enbridge Gas has donated $10,000 to the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority (SCRCA) to fund a wetland restoration and tree planting project on a local landowner’s property. In 2018, The Lenover family reached out about naturalizing a wet area of their agricultural land to help reduce runoff to a tributary of Otter Creek on the North Branch of the Sydenham River.

“We are always excited when we have keen landowners interested in creating or restoring natural habitat on their property. With Enbridge’s support, we were able to create two wetlands on the Lenover property and plant over 1,300 trees!” said Jessica Van Zwol, Healthy Watershed Specialist for the SCRCA. “These projects are important as we are able to take another step towards our goal of improving the health of our watershed and reducing the potential for phosphorus runoff.”

“Enbridge Gas (formally Union Gas) and the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority have a strong, shared history together,” said Steven Jelich, Director of Southwest Region Operations for Enbridge Gas. “Working together to restore another wetland builds on our partnership with the SCRCA and increases wetland habitat in the region. These wetlands will help reduce flooding, improve water filtration of sediment and nutrients, and provide habitat for many species of aquatic and terrestrial wildlife.”

“We are very pleased to partner with Enbridge Gas,” said Joe Faas, chair of the SCRCA. “They are dedicated to giving back to the community. They have supported a number of wetland and natural habitat projects in our watershed over the years! This contribution is above and beyond their generous support for our conservation education programs that are delivered to children throughout our watershed.”

Property owner, Adam Lenover, explained that the motivation behind creating wetland habitat on his property was that “it would give wildlife another place to live.” Lenover also explained the importance of planting trees on his property with so many trees being cut down and not as many new ones being planted.

In addition to the environmental benefits provided by their newly naturalized land, the Lenover family plans to take advantage of new recreation opportunities including winter ice skating and camping. “We are very thankful for this opportunity.”
