SCRCA: Water safety bulletin issued

(SCRCA)

The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority has issued a water safety bulletin for the area.

“The precipitation forecast for today and tomorrow calls for total accumulations between 15 mm and 20 mm,” SCRCA officials said in a media release.

“Water levels are anticipated to rise with the potential for localized flooding in floodplain areas, parks and farm fields throughout the region. Soils already saturated from recent rain could contribute to ponding, increased runoff into watercourses, and possible increased erosion and seepage issues. High amounts of rainfall in a short period of time can lead to increased runoff and flash flooding, particularly in urban areas.”

SCRCA officials say river banks are expected to be slippery, with possible minor erosion.

“Residents are reminded to avoid watercourses and flooded areas due to slippery banks and cold, swift moving water,” SCRCA officials stated.

“Children and pets should be kept away from the water.”

The Conservation Authority continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media should flood issues arise, officials say.

SCRCA officials added municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely.

This message will remain in effect until Friday, October 4, 2019 unless otherwise updated.
