Invest in relationships

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

It can be all too easy in a world where success is measured by the accumulation of material assets to ignore the greater investments.

I am talking about relationships.

We don’t always put the priority on relationships, as we should, because relationships take time and energy.

Robert Brault once said, “Sometimes the shortest distance between two points is a winding path walked arm in arm.”

Jesus was constantly in demand, from sun up until sundown, every single day.

You would think that He would try to find ways to save time in order to cover more ground.

However, the New Testament paints a different picture of the Saviour.

He reclined at table with friends; He sat at a well and talked with an immoral woman who was shunned by her community; and He risked being socially ostracized by turning His attention to 10 men who were lepers and healing them.

Why are we in such a hurry and so concerned with productivity that we convince ourselves that an afternoon with an elderly parent is a waste of time?

Or a lengthy phone call or a visit to someone who lives out of town?

Have you ever asked yourself, “What if this was the last time I’d get to be with this person on earth? Would I do anything different? Do they know how much I love them?”

You will not remember that extra overtime you took on, or that concert or ball game you chose over family, but you will likely recall your last conversation with them when it happens.

Will you be savouring a memory or drowning in regret?

The choice is yours.
