The next Dresden Blood Donation Event is Tuesday,November 19 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the arena.

An anonymous donor has put up three $50 gift certificates for the first three “first time donors” at the Wallaceburg event on Tuesday.

Canadian Blood Services officials say November is special for their organization – it’s a time to honour the women and men of the Canadian Armed Forces by donating blood.

“Members of the Canadian Armed Forces and Department of National Defence civilian employees are some of the most generous and loyal supporters of Canada’s Lifeline,” Canadian Blood Services officials said in a press release.

“In 2006, the Department of National Defence became Canadian Blood Services’ first national Partner for Life organization. Since then, they have donated over 40,000 units of blood and inspired thousands to become regular blood donors. As part of this year’s campaign, we are asking our community partners to pledge their support by organizing group donations and helping to raise awareness through social media.”

Canadian Blood Services officials say everyone has their own reason for donating, addng that the Fitzpatrick family has a very special one.

“In 2016, Colleen Fitzpatrick was named the 2016-2017 National Silver Cross Mother,” Canadian Blood Services officials said in a press release.

“Both Colleen and her husband Jim understand how important it is to be a blood donor and an advocate for blood donation. Their son, Corporal Darren Fitzpatrick, was fatally wounded while serving in Afghanistan. He is fondly remembered for his passion for football, snowboarding and spending time with his family and friends.”

Canadian Blood Services officials say Darren’s parents credit blood donation for prolonging his life.

“He spent his final two weeks at the Landstuhl Medical Centre in Germany, with his family by his side, before succumbing to his injuries,” Canadian Blood Services officials said.

“Colleen passionately reminds us that while blood donation often saves lives, it is equally important to recognize that blood donation prolongs lives as well.”

The Fitzpatrick family’s story inspired the Remember the Power of Giving campaign which ran throughout western Canada, Canadian Blood Services officials said.

“This November, Colleen and her family ask that you share Darren’s story with your employees, customers, friends and networks and inspire them to donate in his honour.”
