Chamber event cancelled due to COVID-19

A networking event planned for later this month at the Wallaceburg Retirement Residence has been cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns.

The Wallaceburg & District Chamber of Commerce’s Connect@5 event, formerly Business After Hours, was slated to be held on March 19, 2020, but was called off this morning, March 12, 2020.

“The owners have advised to shut down every community event that comes in here,” Tina Goetheyn, the general manager at the Wallaceburg Retirement Residence, told the Sydenham Current.

Goetheyn said the decision was made this morning.

The fact that elderly residents are more susceptible to the virus was the main reason for the decision, Goetheyn added.

“So we’re not shut down, we’re just cancelling any community events,” she said.

Goetheyn said visitors are still welcome to attend the retirement home, but if people have been feeling sick or are sick, they should not visit the facility, located at 70 Duke Street in Wallaceburg.

The Wallaceburg & District Chamber of Commerce announced the cancellation in an email to members this morning and in social media posts.

The World Health Organization (WHO) officially declared COVID-19 as a pandemic on Wednesday. Details, here.

The Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit said they will continue taking proactive measures to combat COVID-19. Details, here.
