Police: ‘Our roads are not racetracks’

Local police are reminding residents that the roadways in Chatham-Kent are not racetracks.

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege on Wednesday, an officer with the Traffic Unit observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Middle Line, just outside of Valetta.

The officer recorded the man driving 138km/h in a posted 90km/h zone, police say.

The 29-year-old Tilbury man, who had his young daughter in the car with him and another passenger, was charged with speeding.

About an hour later, the officer observed a vehicle on Wheatley Road travelling at a high rate of speed.

The officer recorded the man driving 132km/h in a posted 80km/h zone.

The 30-year-old Leamington man was charged with stunt driving.

His driver’s license has been suspended for seven days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days as per the Vehicle Impoundment Program.

He will be required to attend Provincial Offences Court on July 29, 2020.

“The Chatham-Kent Police would like to remind drivers that our roads are not racetracks,” police officials said in a media release.

“Just because there is less traffic on our roadways, doesn’t mean that you can pick up the pace. Please slow down, before a speed-related crash ends in tragedy.”

The Ontario Provincial Police have been busy in Chatham-Kent with traffic enforcement.

OPP officials allege on April 23, 2020 at 11:14 p.m. and again at 11:41 p.m. the same vehicle was stopped twice by two different Chatham-Kent Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers on patrol along Highway 401, one near Kent Bridge Road and the other at Queens Line.

The officers noticed the vehicle moving at a high rate of speed, OPP officials allege.

The vehicle was displayed on radar in excess of 140 km/h in the posted 100-km/h zone on both occasions.

The driver, a 45-year-old Ohsweken, Ontario resident, was charged with speeding by each officer.

OPP officials allege on April 28, 2020 at 7:48 p.m. a Chatham-Kent Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer on patrol along Highway 401 near Duart Road noticed a vehicle moving at a high rate of speed.

The vehicle was displayed on radar in excess of 150-km/h in the posted 100-km/h zone.

The driver, a 22-year-old Windsor, Ontario resident, was charged with Race a Motor Vehicle.

This charge includes an immediate seven-day vehicle impoundment.
