911 hang-up call leads to domestic-related charges

A 911 hang-up call has led to domestic-related charges being laid in Chatham.

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege around 3:30 a.m. this morning, the Emergency Communications Centre received a 911 hang-up call.

Dispatchers were able to determine that the call came from an apartment in Chatham.

Officers attended the apartment and learned that the woman had just been assaulted by her common-law with a coat hanger and broom stick, police officials allege.

“We answer 911 calls made from across our Municipality on a daily basis,” stated Sheri Somerville, emergency communications centre manager, in a press release.

“This is one example of someone trying to call for help but wasn’t able to stay on the line. When our emergency communication operators receive notice of any call that enters the 911 network in our area and no one answers, they call back to check on the person who made the call.”

Somerville said in this case, there was no answer.

“The operator became concerned when they weren’t able to speak with someone directly,” Somerville said.

“This prompted a police response to check on the caller’s well-being. In this case, someone was located in need of assistance. We would like to remind everyone that even if you can’t talk or if you dial and the line is disconnected… we will do what we can to try to find you.”

Police officials say the 32-year-old Chatham man was arrested and charged with assault and two counts of assault with a weapon.

He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
