Fatal fire in Erieau

An investigation is underway after a fatal fire in Erieau.

Chatham-Kent Fire & Emergency Services officials say crews were dispatched to 1030 Kerr Avenue at 1:55 a.m. this morning, May 26, for a structure fire.

“Just before 2 a.m. this morning, firefighters from Station #14 Erieau were dispatched to smoke coming from a home in Kerr Avenue,” fire officials said in a press release.

“They arrived on scene within minutes to find the home fully engulfed in flames. Station #18 Blenheim was immediately sent to assist. One deceased person was found in the residence. Police and EMS were also on scene.”

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials say 73-year-old woman was found deceased in the residence.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Constable Rob Bowles at robbo@chatham-kent.ca or 519-436-6655,” police officials said in a media release.

“Anonymous callers may call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) and may be eligible for a cash reward.”

The Office of the Fire Marshal will be attending to investigate, Chatham-Kent Fire & Emergency Services officials say.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
