SCRCA: Flood warning downgraded to flood watch

The St. CLair Region COnservation Authority has downgraded the flood warning issued on Wednesday evening to a flood watch.

“Strong westerly winds continue today with gusts upwards of 50 km/h, subsiding late this evening,” SCRCA officials stated.

“Wind-driven minor flooding is anticipated along the Lake St. Clair shoreline and Sydenham River in Wallaceburg due to record-high water levels and a backwater effect. Residents along the shoreline may experience increased wave action with a potential for erosion.”

Severe thunderstorms brought varying amounts of precipitation across the region in the past 36 hours, ranging between 15 and 60 mm of rain, SCRCA officials added.

“This amount of precipitation has the potential to sustain elevated water levels in the lower reaches of the watershed,” SCRCA officials say.

River banks and shorelines are expected to be slippery, with possible minor erosion.

Residents are reminded to avoid watercourses and flooded areas due to slippery banks and cold, swift moving water.

Children and pets should be kept away from the water, SCRCA officials added.

The Conservation Authority continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media should flood issues arise.

Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely.

This message will remain in effect until Friday, June 12, 2020, unless otherwise updated.
