From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin
I have a shirt in my dresser that I only wear once each year, and that day is TODAY!
It is my favourite shirt but due to its threadbare condition I handle it with tender loving care.
You see, it is a shirt that says, ‘Best Dad, Hands Down’ and it was purchased by my five children many years ago at Zellers Department Store.
My wife actually made the purchase because my oldest child was only about 13-years-old at the time.
This white T-shirt was mostly blank and came with three different coloured paints.
The children painted their hands and then placed their hands on the shirt to display a permanent image.
This shirt is finest gold to me.
It’s worth more than money.
But I have a secret, which is not really all that secret.
I am undeserving of this title.
I know in my heart that I am definitely NOT the best dad, hands down.
My heavenly Dad knows it, too, but He is with me every step of the way to help this earthly dad do the best that he can.
I remember being in the birthing room in the Petrolia hospital in April 1992 when Alyssa, or first child, was being born.
I was so apprehensive about becoming a dad and felt overwhelmed by the daunting task that lay in front of me.
Our doctor, Dr. Don Denmark, assured me that God would give me ‘on the job’ training.
I can say after more than 28 years that He has done exactly that.
I am looking forward to my chicken wings and cherry dessert today, a Fathers’ Day staple for me, and to wearing my special T-shirt.
But that’s all just appetizers to the real main course for me: spending a wonderful day with my children!
Happy Fathers’ Day to all the dads out there today!
