Smoking leads to $50,000 blaze in Chatham

Smoking is being blamed for igniting a $50,000 fire in Chatham.

“Station #1 and #2 – Chatham responded to a fire at 8 Ingram St yesterday evening just after 5 p.m.” Chatham-Kent Fire & Emergency Services officials said in a media release.

“When the crews arrived on scene there was smoke coming from the door frame and front window of one of the apartment units. There were no injuries. The fire started from a cigarette which was not properly extinguished.”

Damage is pegged at $50,000, fire officials say.
