‘Just because’ calling

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

I want to encourage you to do something this week, something profound and meaningful, something that will brighten another person’s day.

I want you to call them on the phone.

Yep, that’s right, just a simple phone call.

Not a text.

Not a message on Facebook.

Someone this week needs to hear your voice on the other end of the phone and know that you cared enough to take the time to call them.

Here is what King David said when he was on the run from his enemies and hiding in a cave, as recorded in Psalm 142:4: “Look on my right hand and see, for there is no one who acknowledges me; refuge has failed me; no one cares for my soul.”

That sounds pretty desperate, doesn’t it?

When the COVID-19 pandemic started I determined to start a phone blitz of people in my congregation.

I had other church leaders also assist me with this.

Invariably, many of the people I called simply appreciated hearing my voice.

Being isolated for extended periods of time with no visitors, especially seniors living alone, left the simple telephone as their sole lifeline to the outside world.

Nothing beats an actual visit in person, but a phone call with a friendly and familiar voice on the other end is a close second.

Is there someone this week that could use a phone call from you?

Sometimes encouragement isn’t so much what we say as in the fact that we just said it.

Go ahead, make that call!
