Highgate’s Emily Geroux captures CKHA Foundation 50/50 prize

In less than 24 hours since the winning number was drawn, the largest-ever Igniting Healthcare 50/50 jackpot has been claimed.

“We received notification early (Thursday) morning that someone in Highgate believed they had the winning ticket,” stated Mary Lou Crowley, President & CEO of Chatham-Kent Health Alliance Foundation, in a media release.

“It’s exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time waiting for the winner to come forward after the ticket is drawn. With tickets being sold right across Ontario, we are so thrilled to see the jackpot going to someone in our community.”

The lucky winner, Emily Geroux, had not checked her ticket until Thursday morning, after she had been discussing with her husband during breakfast that a winner had not yet been announced.

“I realized I had the number and I just said ‘I won! I won! I won!’,” Geroux said in a media release.

“I couldn’t believe it, I have never won anything before.”

Geroux added that she bought the ticket because she wanted to support a worthy cause and their initial plans for the money include buying a new truck with more seating to accommodate their grand-kids and using some to replace their deck.

A total of 9,671 tickets accounting for 1,194,410 numbers were sold for this year’s Igniting Healthcare 50/50 FUNdraiser.
