Restorative Justice Chatham-Kent helping youth in conflict with law

There are times when young people find themselves in conflict with the law.

The Chatham-Kent Police Services partnership with Restorative Justice Chatham-Kent, allows for youth to participate in Extrajudicial Measures, which is a pre-charge diversion program authorized by the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

This program allows for effective and timely interventions with youth who have committed minor offences.

“We truly value the strong partnership our organization has forged with CKPS over the years,” says Cecily Coppola, Executive Director of Restorative Justice CK.

“Together, and with community buy-in and engagement, we have led 74 youth through the EJM program since 2017, alone. These youth have been given an opportunity to learn from their behaviour in a meaningful way while also receiving support to develop pro-social coping skills, and engage with their community, creating positive ties. All of which leads directly to a reduction in repeat youth offences, and ultimately contributes to a safer, healthier Chatham-Kent – something that both we and CKPS strongly value, and continually strive for.”
