Transgender Awareness Week recognized during flag raising ceremony

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent recognized Transgender Awareness Week with a flag-raising ceremony at the Civic Centre on Monday, November 16, 2020.

During the ceremony, CK Pride Association Vice President Marianne Willson said while acceptance of trans individuals continues to grow there is much room for improvement noting that it is unfortunate that there needs to be a day held each year to remember the victims of violence in the trans community.

Hunter Johnson, a member of the trans community, said 350 trans people have been killed during the last year, with trans women of colour often being the victims, Municipal officials said.

Johnston hoped for a day when the world could celebrate without the need to mourn.

Transgender Day of Remembrance will take place Friday, November 20 to honor the memory of transgender people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence.

Chatham Councillor Brock McGregor said the crowd of nearly 50 shows community support is growing.

Last year marked the first time Transgender Awareness Week flag was flown at the Civic Centre.
