Project updates for new Chatham elementary schools

The St. Clair Catholic District School Board has selected the architect to design the new South Chatham elementary school.

“I am pleased to announce that the Ventin Group Architects (+VG) has been selected to lead the design of our new Chatham school,” stated Amy Janssens, associate director treasurer of the board, in a media release.

“Through the Board’s RFP (request for proposals) process, the Ventin Group Architects (+VG) emerged as the successful proponent.”

The Ventin Group will assist the Board to develop a sustainable new school, which will include environmental and energy efficiency principles as part of the design, school board officials say.

As part of its proposal, the Ventin Group outlined its approach to the design process, including the ability to develop consensus and to successfully meet program requirements, schedule deadlines and budget restraints,

Administrative staff will now begin to work with the Ventin Group to schedule User Group sessions, with students, parents, staff, trustees and senior administration, who will provide input into the schematic design, school board officials say.

“We are looking forward to a successful working relationship with the Ventin Group Architects (+VG),” Janssens added.

School board officials say construction at the new Monsignor Uyen Catholic School on Baldoon Road is on schedule, with a completion date of July 30, 2021.

The project is 82 per cent complete, with remaining construction at the site to include:

– Partial roof – north portion of school

– School signage on Baldoon Road

– Rear exterior asphalt replacement

– Supply and install 84 lockers

– Replace roof top units for the child care area

– Install access control at all exterior doors

– New PA system, security system and phone system

“We are very pleased with the pace of construction on this project,” said Deb Crawford, director of education, in a media release.

“We look forward to beginning to transition our staff into the building over the summer and will be ready to welcome students in September.”

School board officials say administration office furniture will be ordered and installed in late May.

Learning commons furniture will arrive in late June and classroom furniture will be moved from the current Monsignor Uyen to the Baldoon Road site at the end of June.

“This is an exciting time for our French Immersion students in Chatham, as we look forward to September,” added Crawford.
