$3-million damage after Inshes Street blaze, plus two other fires in Chatham

Chatham-Kent Fire an Emergency Services officials have released the estimated damage total, after a blaze on Inshes Ave. in Chatham on Wednesday, May 19, 2021.

Fire officials say damage is pegged at $3-million.

The cause of the blaze is undetermined, fire officials added.

Crews from station #1 and #2 in Chatham responded at 9:08 a.m. on Wednesday morning to a large fire at 285 Inshes Ave.

“They arrived on scene to find a fully developed fire in unoccupied building already spreading rapidly to the neighbouring restaurant,” fire officials said in a media release on Wednesday.

“Firefighters worked quickly to stop the blaze from spreading to any other business. Fire officials say Station #15 – Raleigh North was called to assist with the fire.”

Two aerial trucks and five lines were utilized to control the fire, fire officials say.

At one point there were almost 50 firefighters on scene.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service also evacuated a number of homes in the area, fire officials say, while paramedics provided rehab support to firefighters.

The OFM was called and there were no injuries reported.

Thames Street fire

Also on Wednesday, firefighters from from Station #1 and #2 responded to 193 Thames Street in Chatham for an attached garage fire.

“Fire contained the garage, no injuries,” fire officials say.

The cause has been ruled accidental.

Damage is pegged at $10,000.

Fire on West Street in Chatham

Firefighters from Station #1 and #2 attended 158 West Street in Chatham on Monday, May 17, 2021, for reports of smoke coming from the roof of the home.

“Crews arrived and confirmed heavy smoke showing from all sides of the roof,” fire officials say.

“Two occupants who were home performing home renovations at the time were able to escape without injury. Fire crews worked to gain access to the attic fire while battling high heat and smoke conditions.”

Fire officials say 19 Firefighters were on scene along with EMS and police.

“EMS worked with crews to perform firefighter rehab and safety,” fire officials say.

“CK Police evacuated homes on either side of the property during the fire but residents were able to return shortly after.”

Fire officials say the blaze was deemed accidental as a result of the construction work being performed.

Damage is estimated at $300,000 and there were no injuries.
