Lambton County OPP are reminding the public that golf carts are intended for private property use only and are not permitted on Ontario roads.
Police said motorists operating golf carts on highways could face several charges, including operating a motor vehicle on a roadway with no insurance, operating a motor vehicle with no vehicle permit and operating a motor vehicle on a roadway without a driver’s licence.
OPP also warned that impaired driving laws apply to golf carts both on and off roadways.
“In addition, if you are intoxicated by alcohol or drugs, you could face impaired driving charges while operating a golf cart on or off the roadway,” police said in a media release.
Police are encouraging residents considering alternative forms of transportation to familiarize themselves with the rules and regulations governing those vehicles.
The OPP said traffic safety remains a shared responsibility and urged drivers to help keep Ontario roads safe.
Lambton County OPP said the detachment remains committed to traffic safety, enforcement and education to promote safe driving habits across the region.
