Fatal train collision in Chatham

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: Shortly after 9 p.m. last night, police responded to a collision involving a VIA Rail passenger train and pedestrian in the area of Bloomfield Road near Queens Line in Chatham.

Through investigation, police learned that the train was travelling westbound from Toronto to Windsor, when a man lying in the middle of the rail crossing was struck.

The victim, a 38-year-old Chatham man sustained life-threatening injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

No one on the train was physically injured.

The Traffic Unit has taken over the investigation.
