Update #7 at 6:22 p.m. – severe thunderstorm warning – At 6:22 p.m. EDT, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a line of severe thunderstorms capable of producing very strong wind gusts.

This line of severe thunderstorms is located from Wilkesport to 9 kilometres southwest of Mitchell’s Bay, moving east at 30 km/h.

Hazard: 90 km/h wind gusts.

Locations impacted include:
Mitchell’s Bay, Grande Pointe, Pain Court and Bentpath.

Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!

Update #6 at 5:30 p.m. – rainfall warning issued in Chatham-Kent – Rain, at times heavy, continues.

Local rainfall amounts in excess of 50 mm have fallen in some locations according to radar.

Total rainfall amounts will be quite variable with some locations expected to receive 75 to 100 mm before the showers and thunderstorms taper late this evening.

Additional rainfall amounts of 15 to 25 mm are possible through Thursday afternoon.

Rodney, Oil Springs, Melbourne, John E. Pearce Provincial Park, Shedden, Port Lambton, Sombra, Courtright, Wilkesport, Becher, Brigden, Dresden, Bentpath, Oil City, Florence, Inwood, Thamesville, Bothwell, Alvinston and Highgate.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible.

Hazard: Wind gusts up to 100 km/h, locally heavy rain, and isolated hail up to nickel size possible. A tornado cannot be ruled out.

Locations: Portions of southwestern Ontario.

Timing: This afternoon through to this evening.

Discussion: A few thunderstorms will develop early this afternoon before becoming more widespread by this evening. The predominant threat associated with these storms will be locally damaging winds and torrential downpours. Rainfall amounts may approach or exceed 50 mm locally by this evening.
