Severe thunderstorm watch continues

Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts and large hail.

Hazards:
Wind gusts of 100 km/h.
Up to nickel size hail.

Timing:
Continuing tonight.

Discussion:
Another line of thunderstorms has developed over western Michigan and may affect Southwestern Ontario later this evening and into the overnight hours. There is significant uncertainty as to the exact track of these thunderstorms, however, strong winds and hail are possible should these thunderstorms track over the area.

Very strong wind gusts can damage buildings, down trees and blow large vehicles off the road. Locally heavy rain is also possible. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.

The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.

Severe thunderstorm warning issued in Chatham-Kent:

At 5:18 p.m. EDT, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a line of severe thunderstorms capable of producing very strong wind gusts and up to nickel size hail.

This long line of severe thunderstorms is located from Rondeau Provincial Park to Forest to Narva, moving east at 75 km/h.

Hazard: 100 km/h wind gusts and up to nickel size hail.

Locations impacted include:
Forest, Grand Bend, Parkhill, Rodney, Strathroy, Exeter, Wingham, Walkerton, Hanover and Durham.

Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Locally heavy rain is also possible. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes.

Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.

Thunderstorms have developed over Michigan and are tracking towards the area. This initial line of thunderstorms is expected to track over the area late this afternoon and early this evening. After this line of thunderstorms, another line of thunderstorms may track over the area late this evening or overnight.
