Walpole Island school closed due to spike in COVID-19 cases

Bkejwanong Kinomaagewgamig, the elementary school on Walpole Island, has been closed due to a spike in COVID-19 cases.

“Our school has been closed by public health due to increasing COVID cases in the school and community,” school officials posted this morning, September 24, 2021, on social media.

“Please follow the directions given by public health for maintaining safety protocols. Please be aware that the WIFN Health Center and Lambton Public Health may be trying to contact families for contact tracing and next steps.”

Walpole Island officials said on Thursday there are currently 18 active COVID-19 cases on the First Nation reserve.

Since the pandemic began, 197 positives cases have been confirmed on Walpole, 1,441 tests have been conducted and four people have died.

There are also 15 pending cases, Walpole Island officials say.
