Mental Health Week being celebrated

Mental Health Week was celebrated Monday with a ceremony and flag raising at the Civic Centre.

Approximately 50 people attended the social distance event.

“We are here to support each other… not tear each other down.”

That amazing statement was made by guest speaker, Jessie Lashmore.

Recognizing the need in our community is the first step to building the support system we need. Speak out, listen, volunteer and together, let’s hold each other up.

Chatham-Kent Mayor Darrin Canniff noted that speaking about mental health is now expected and encouraged in comparison to years gone by.

Officials of Bell Canada, which has spearheaded $100 million in donations to mental health, and the Mental Health Network of Chatham-Kent which operates a wide variety of services including Hope House, spoke about the need for mental health awareness.

It is estimated that one in three Canadians will deal with an issue of mental health during their lifetime.
