Grain Farmers of Ontario District 2 donates to local food banks

Just before the holiday season, the Grain Farmers of Ontario provided support to a couple of local food banks.

District 2 (Kent) donated $4,000 to be shared between two local resources.

Half of the donation went to Chatham Outreach for Hunger and the other half went to the Salvation Army food banks.

Grain Farmers of Ontario (GFO) is the province’s largest commodity organization, representing Ontario’s 28,000 barley, corn, oat, soybean and wheat farmers.

The farmer members of this organization are divided up into 15 districts based on geographical area.

District 2 represents the commodity farmers growing within the Municipality of Chatham-Kent.

“GFO takes our role of growing and providing high quality, nutritious grains seriously,” GFO officials say.

“In these unprecedented times we wish to continue to support our community’s access to quality food and nutrition with this donation. This is in addition to support GFO District 2 has provided through a coalition with local agricultural groups surrounding Ag Day and Food Freedom Day in Canada since 2015.”

Chatham Outreach for Hunger supports Chatham-Kent through their central location on Wellington St in Chatham.

The Chatham-Kent Salvation Army operates four food banks within the municipality, located in Blenheim, Chatham, Ridgetown, and Wallaceburg.

“The CK Salvation Army has been an important partner to the GFO District 2 and the KFA by also annually volunteering a location to collect and distribute the many pounds of food donated by these agricultural organizations each year,” GFO officials say.

GFO District 2 supports local food banks and their shared mission of maintaining access to quality food for all.
