TBT: Marian Coveny, Team Canada Captain at the 1987 Women’s World Hockey Tournament

Throwback Thursday is sponsored by Your Hometown Deli in Wallaceburg:

Back in 1987, the first ever Women’s World Hockey Tournament was held.

And the Captain for Team Canada was Wallaceburg resident, Marian Coveny.

The CBC posted a story, with videos, about the tournament back in 2019. Check it out, here: In 1987, the best women in hockey hailed from Canada (and Ontario)

At the time in 1987, Coveny was captain of the Hamilton Goldenhawks, which led her to being captain of Team Canada.

Coveny was also a member of the Wallaceburg Hornetts women’s hockey team, was inducted into the Wallaceburg Sports Hall of Fame and was also inducted into the McMaster University Athletics Hall of Fame.

“Marian was an offensive threat on the ice and consistent top scorer. She was a member of two OWIAA Championship hockey teams. After graduation, played in several national ice hockey Championships across Canada,” McMaster University posted on their website.

Thanks to Marian’s family for sharing this information and photos.
