Municipality of Chatham-Kent Council approved a series of recommendations at their virtual meeting on Monday, February 14, 2022, which sets in motion the creation of a multi-phase development on a new 5.4-acre site on Base Line Road in Wallaceburg.
With the land severance approved, the first step for the project is a five-story, 85 unit building.
The development will be known as Royal Ridge Residences and will feature a mix of one-and two-bedroom units as well as several amenities including an onsite gym, Municipal officials said in a press release.
On Monday, Council gave the green light for an official plan amendment, land severance and a minor variance at the 7030 Base Line Road location.
“This is an incredibly positive and exciting project for the community of Wallaceburg… something our community has not seen for many, many years,” Wallaceburg Councillor Aaron Hall said, during Monday’s meeting.
“As a Council, throughout our term, we’ve seen the momentum of growth taking place in Chatham-Kent. Staff has been clear that this momentum is unprecedented and is expected to continue.”
Hall said he knows there is a strong demand for growth in Wallaceburg from the community.
“And I know there is a strong interest and demand by developers and people to grow in Wallaceburg as well,” he added.
“This proposed project is a clear indication of that. And I’d like to thank-you the developer in this case for looking at Wallaceburg as a place to invest in.”
Hall said he believes “this is the first domino to fall” in terms of sustained and needed growth in Wallaceburg.
“I look forward to more to come,” he said.
In a staff report, Ryan Jacques, director of planning, said the project will require zoning amendments and site plan approval, which will require Council approval.
This is expected to come before Council in the future, Jacques added in the report.
