Strong winds expected, special weather statement issued

Update: The special weather statement has ended.

A special weather statement has been issued by Environment Canada in Chatham-Kent, as strong winds are expected today.

Forecasters say hazards, include:

– Strong winds gusting between 70 and 80 km/h.

– Areas of reduced visibility in blowing snow, particularly this morning.

The winds will rapidly weaken this evening, forecasters added.

“An Alberta Clipper will bring strong winds to southern Ontario today,” Environment Canada officials say.

“Very strong westerly winds are expected with gusts between 70 and 80 km/h.”

Impacts, include:

– Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage.

– High winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break.

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials say extreme weather conditions are being seen in C-K.

“Weather conditions are very poor this morning,’ police officials said on social media.

“Visibility on county roadways is minimal to zero in spots. Please avoid any unnecessary travel. Stay safe.”

Police officials added: “As per Environment Canada expect winds between 70 and 80 km/h causing drifting and blowing snow. Please avoid nonessential traffic as road conditions are poor and will not improve until the winds recede. There are multiple vehicles off highway that require a tow for removal as of 7 a.m. The Chatham-Kent Police cannot facilitate removal while the weather conditions remain dangerous.”
