Legion expanding Salute Our Veterans Memorial Banner Program in downtown Wallaceburg

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 18 in Wallaceburg is expanding their Salute Our Veterans Memorial Banner Program.

Peter Polkinghorne, an executive member at Branch 18, told the Sydenham Current they are making a call to the community for banner sponsors in 2022.

“Your Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 18 at the Forks has since 2016, made available to any family or business a chance, by sponsorship, to procure a ‘Salute Our Veterans Banner’ and have it displayed on the lamp posts in the downtown area,” Polkinghorne said.

“Over the years with more being interested in being a part of this Memorial Program, the posts have been filled – even to the extent that three years ago the posts on the south side of Wellington Street were put into service.”

Polkinghorne said new starting this year the Legion has again partnered with the Downtown BIA and will be instituting a new program to augment the display on the posts.

“That will be to have business in the downtown core display ‘Banners’ in their windows along James, Wellington, Nelson, and Duncan Streets,” he said.

“With this program there will be the possibility of 30+ more sponsors for our ‘Salute Our Veterans’. This is open to any family, friend, or business to sponsor a Veteran (living or deceased) and all information can be obtained by emailing 05-018@legion.ca and a complete explanation of the program and a Sponsor Application will be emailed back to you.”

Polkinghorne said people can also call him at 519-627-8370 with any questions or concerns.

“There are presently 51 Veteran Posters in use, and it would be so special to increase that number to at least 70 for the upcoming display period, which is usually from late September to just after November 11.”
