Fraud warning: ‘Grandparent Scam’ pops up in Wallaceburg & Dresden

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: On July 1, 2022 the Chatham-Kent Police received two more calls regarding the ‘Grandparent Scam’.

One elderly Wallaceburg woman withdrew $5,000 dollars and an elderly Dresden woman withdrew $10,000 dollars in reference to this fraud.

The Chatham-Kent Police are encouraging family members to educate their parents, grandparents and senior family members about this scam.

The known details of the scam are as follows:

– People purporting to be a family member (grandchild) or from the family member’s lawyer

– This person claims to be in trouble with the police and requires money for bail.

– They often ask the victim not to tell anyone and need the money immediately. Scammers will use panic, threatening language or an aggressive tone to scare you into making payments.
