Chatham-Kent woman dies after a canoe capsized in North Bay

North Bay OPP officials allege: On August 30, 2022, at 7:20 p.m., members from the North Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Nipissing Paramedic Services and Argyle Fire Department responded to a capsized canoe, on Legrou Lake in East Mills Township.

Investigation revealed that four occupants were in a canoe that capsized, two of which were able to swim to shore.

One of the two occupants that did not swim to shore was located by neighbouring cottagers.

Life saving techniques were attempted but the person was pronounced deceased by medical professionals.

On September 1, 2022, the Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (U.S.R.U.) of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) retrieved a body from the waters of Legrou Lake in East Mills Township

The two deceased are identified as, Stephanie Imeson, 25-years-of-age, from Chatham-Kent and Derek Comartin, 27-years-of-age, from Stoney Point.

The investigation is ongoing under the direction of the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service (OCCO-OFPS).
