Traffic stop leads to charges

OPP officials allege: The Ontario Provincial Police has charged two individuals following a traffic stop.

On December 7, 2022, at approximately 2:34 p.m., a member of the Elgin Chatham Detachment conducted a traffic stop on the westbound Highway 401, Municipality of Chatham-Kent after a passenger vehicle was found speeding 171 Km/h in a posted 100 Km/h zone.

Officers arrested the driver and the passenger of the vehicle after both attempted to obstruct the investigation.

Police discovered numerous packages within the vehicle that had been reported missing or stolen.

As a result of the investigation, a 19-year-old Welland, Ontario man was charged with the following:

– Drive Motor Vehicle – Perform Stunt – Excessive Speed

– Drive Motor Vehicle – no licence

– Obstruct Peace Officer

– Possession Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000 (13 Counts)

Additionally, a 20-year-old Windsor, Ontario man was charged with the following:

– Obstruct Peace Officer

– Possession Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000 (13 Counts)

A 30-day administrative driver licence suspension (ADLS) and 14-day impoundment of the vehicle was initiated as per statute.

Both the accused are scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Chatham at a later date.

Break and enter

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: Yesterday at 7:49 a.m. police attended a business on Richmond Street in Chatham, responding to a call of a break and enter.

Unknown suspects smashed the front door causing approximately $800 damage.
